Australia has officially increased the student visa Evidence Level for India, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Bhutan from Level 2 to Level 3, effective 9 January 2026. Evidence Level 3 is the strictest category under Australia’s Simplified Student Visa Framework (SSVF) and involves much higher scrutiny of student visa applications.
This decision was taken due to a rise in fake financial documents and forged academic certificates, detected during late 2025 visa applications.
What Was the Situation Before?
Before January 9, 2026 (Evidence Level 2):
- Basic financial evidence was usually sufficient
- Shorter bank statement history accepted
- Limited source-of-funds explanation required
- Faster processing times (around 10–14 days)
- Fewer verification checks with institutions
Students generally faced simpler documentation requirements and quicker visa decisions.
What Has Changed Now?
After January 9, 2026 (Evidence Level 3):
- Minimum 3 months of bank statements required
- Detailed and verifiable source of funds explanation mandatory
- Authenticated academic transcripts required
- Increased biometric checks and background verification
- Spot checks with education providers
- Possible processing time increase to 4–6 weeks
Applications are now reviewed much more carefully to ensure the applicant is a genuine student.
Why Did Australia Take This Step?
Australian authorities identified a sharp increase in:
- Forged bank guarantees
- Fake degree certificates
- Non-genuine student applications
A major crackdown in India, where over 1,200 counterfeit academic documents were seized, prompted Australian Home Affairs to act swiftly to protect the integrity of its international education system.
