Canada Increases Financial Requirement for Study Permits from September 2025
What’s New?
Starting September 1, 2025, international students applying for a Canadian study permit must show CAD$22,895 in proof of funds for living expenses — a rise from the previous CAD$20,635. This increase is part of Canada’s ongoing effort to adjust financial requirements in line with inflation, as first announced in December 2023.
Who Does This Apply To?
- All students applying for a study permit on or after September 1, 2025
- Applies to all provinces and territories outside Quebec
- Amounts increase based on the number of family members accompanying the applicant
Why This Matters?
This is the latest move in a series of policy shifts in Canada and other major destinations that are making it more expensive for international students to study abroad. The requirement ensures students can financially sustain themselves without relying on employment in Canada.
🌍 Wider Impact on International Students
- Higher Financial Burden
Students must now save more upfront before applying. For many from lower- and middle-income countries, this may delay or block access to Canadian education. - More Documentation Required
Applicants must present updated bank statements or financial documents to meet the new requirement, adding another layer to the visa process. - Global Trend of Rising Costs
Canada isn’t alone:- Australia raised student visa fees to AUD$2,000
- UK increased visa fees from £490 to £524
- USA implemented new immigration costs through Trump’s One Big Beautiful Act, including:
- Visa integrity fee of at least $250
- Form I-94 application fee of at least $24
- Fewer Study Options
With increasing costs and recent study permit caps in Canada, especially for master’s students, international students may reconsider destination countries or postpone study plans altogether.
🎓 What Should Students Do?
- Plan Early: Start saving and preparing your financial documents months in advance.
- Consider Alternatives: Look into scholarships, more affordable institutions, or countries with lower entry costs.
- Stay Updated: Immigration policies are shifting rapidly—consult certified advisors or reliable consultants regularly.
