Survey Confirms UK as Leading Study Destination Despite Challenges

Despite recent immigration policy changes in the UK, the country remains the top study destination for international pathway students (students enrolled in foundation or pre-master’s programs). A new NCUK survey shows that 80% of students still prefer the UK over other countries.
Key Findings from the Survey

  1. UK Still No. 1
    • Out of 921 students from 88 countries, 80% chose the UK as their top destination.
    • Other preferences:
      • Australia – 4%
      • Canada, US, New Zealand, Ireland – 3% each.
  2. Popular Fields of Study
    • Business and Computer Science are the most in-demand courses (chosen by 31% of respondents).
  3. Why Students Still Choose the UK
    • Students focus on quality education, career development, and knowledge gain rather than short-term political changes.
    • 70% cited education quality as their top reason.

UK Policy Changes That Could Affect Students

  • Graduate Route reduced: Students will now get 18 months post-study work rights instead of 2 years.
  • Tougher compliance rules for universities: Institutions will face penalties if more than 5% of visa applications are rejected (previously the threshold was 10%).
  • Increased financial proof:
    • London – £1,483/month
    • Outside London – £1,136/month

Despite these, only 12% of surveyed students said the new financial requirements would stop them from applying to the UK.

Comparison with Other Countries

  • Australia: 36% said enrolment caps would discourage them.
  • Canada: 26% said new policies (like changes to postgrad work permits) would stop them from applying.
  • USA: 38% said Donald Trump’s second presidency would negatively impact their decision.

So, while policies in other countries are pushing students away, the UK is still considered worth it.

Post-Graduation Plans of Students

  • 50% want to stay in their study destination:
    • 31% to work
    • 19% to continue studies
  • 23% plan to return home immediately after graduation (up from 18% last year).

Current Political Climate in the UK

  • Immigration remains a hot issue.
  • The government (Labour, led by KeirStarmer) is tightening policies.
  • Home Secretary Yvette Cooper recently announced tougher measures against students making “bogus asylum claims” to stay in the UK after their visas expire.
  • Around 10,000 students have already been sent warnings by text and email.
Even with stricter immigration rules, the UK is still the top study choice for international students, because they value education quality and long-term career prospects more than short-term political shifts.

Despite policy shifts, the UK remains the top choice for international students. If you’re planning your study journey, connect with WAC Consultants for expert guidance today!
