A new expansion of President Trump’s travel ban is now creating serious challenges for international students who were already admitted to American universities.
📌 What Happened?
On December 16, 2025, the Trump administration announced an expansion of its earlier June 2025 travel ban, which now fully or partially restricts travel to the United States from 39 countries.
🎓 International Students Affected
This policy has caused major visa-processing backlogs, preventing six newly admitted international students from arriving for the Spring 2026 semester at the University of Portland (UP).
According to Michael Pelley, Director of International Student Services, these students were unable to enroll because they could not secure visa interview appointments in time.
🛂 Why Are Visa Delays Happening?
To study legally in the U.S., international students must apply for a student visa through a U.S. embassy or consulate.
However, due to the U.S. State Department’s heightened review process:
- Visa interviews are moving much slower
- Appointment slots are limited
- Many admitted students cannot get interviews on time
🌍 Countries Impacted
The six affected students came from:
- Nigeria
- Malawi
- Tanzania
- Iran
Restrictions Explained:
- Nigeria, Malawi, and Tanzania are partially restricted
- Iran is fully prohibited, unless an exception applies
✅ Current Students Not Blocked
University officials confirmed that currently enrolled international students have not been prevented from returning to campus.
The restrictions mainly affect new incoming students.
🔮 Concerns for Fall 2026 Intake
Students admitted for the Fall 2026 semester are now also racing to secure visa appointments.
The university says it will continue monitoring travel policy changes and keep students updated.
Why This Matters
This situation highlights growing uncertainty for international students, as political travel restrictions and visa delays can prevent even admitted students from beginning their studies in the U.S.
