đ°Whatâs New?
New Zealand has introduced a more flexible rule for its Post Study Work Visa (PSWV). Now, international students who study a Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) and then progress to a Masterâs degree (even if the Masterâs is short) can still qualify for a PSWV.
Â
đ What Was the Issue Before?
Previously, if a student:
- Completed a PGDip (30 weeks), and
- Then started a Masterâs program that lasted less than 30 weeks,
They were not eligible for a Post Study Work Visa, even though they completed two high-level qualifications.
Â
â Whatâs Changed Now?
If a student:
- Completes a PGDip (at least 30 weeks), and
- Immediately starts a Masterâs degree,
They are now eligible for a PSWV, even if the Masterâs program is shorter than 30 weeks.
Â
đ¨âđExample :
- A student completes a 30-week Postgraduate Diploma in Business
- Then immediately starts a 20-week Masterâs in Management

New Rule: Eligible for a PSWV â
The combined study pathway is now recognized for work visa purposes.

 Impact on Pakistani Students
đš 1. Better Flexibility
Pakistani students often choose PGDip programs due to affordability and admission ease. Now they can move into Masterâs programs confidently, knowing it wonât affect their visa chances.
đš 2. Work & Residency Pathways
Students will now have access to post-study work visas, which may later lead to permanent residency in New Zealand â a major attraction for Pakistani families.
đš 3. Budget-Friendly Options
Studying a PGDip + shorter Masterâs is less expensive than a full-length Masterâs. This makes New Zealand an affordable alternative to the UK, Australia, or Canada.
đš 4. Encourages More Applications
Due to previous strict visa rules, many Pakistani students skipped NZ. This positive change can boost applications from Pakistan and make NZ more appealing.
