New Zealand Reaches International Education Milestone Ahead of Schedule

Strong Global Preference for New Zealand
A new survey by Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) shows that 22% of prospective international students now rank New Zealand among their top three study destinations. This milestone was originally set for 2034 under the government’s international education growth strategy, but has been achieved nearly a decade early.

Growing Appeal Beyond Awareness
While awareness of New Zealand as a study destination remains high at 79% across key markets, the more significant shift is in student preference. According to ENZ acting chief executive Linda Sissons, more students are moving from simply knowing about New Zealand to actively choosing it as a preferred study option.

Expanding Beyond Traditional Study Destinations
The survey highlights a shift away from the traditional “big four” destinations:
United States
United Kingdom
Australia
Canada

By analyzing 11 global study markets, the report provides a broader perspective, showing New Zealand emerging as a competitive and attractive alternative.

Rising International Student Enrolments
New Zealand’s education sector is experiencing strong growth:
2024: 83,425 international students (up 21% from 2023)
Jan–Aug 2025: 83,535 students (already exceeding 2024 total, up 14% year-on-year)

These figures indicate a robust recovery and increasing global demand for New Zealand education.

Strategic Growth Plans for the Future
The findings from the Global Brand Health and Awareness Survey will guide ENZ’s 2026/27 planning and investment strategies, helping the country strengthen its position as a leading global education hub.

What This Means for International Students
New Zealand is rapidly becoming a top choice for students worldwide due to:
High-quality education system
Safe and welcoming environment
Increasing global recognition
Strong career and post-study opportunities
